Strength training after 40 can help you stay strong, active and confident. Discover the benefits of strength training over 40 and how to get started.
From your 40s onwards maintaining muscle, strength and physical confidence becomes increasingly important. As we age, we naturally start to lose muscle mass and strength if we don’t actively work to maintain it. Over time, that can affect how capable we feel in everyday life.
Muscle isn’t just about how you look. It helps you move, supports your joints and allows you to perform everyday tasks more easily. The more muscle and strength you maintain as you get older, the more capable you are likely to feel. That doesn’t mean you need to train like a bodybuilder. For most people, two or three well-structured strength sessions each week can make a huge difference over time. The key is consistency.
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is: “I need to get fitter before I join.” You don’t. A good training environment should meet you where you are. Exercises can be adapted, weights can be adjusted and your training should be challenging for you, not compared with anyone else.
When people think about fitness goals, they often think about weight loss, clothes sizes or how they look. Those things may matter to you but there is another goal that becomes increasingly important with age and that's independence. That could look like being strong enough to continue doing things for yourself such as getting up from a chair easily, carrying your own bags, moving furniture, getting off the floor, travelling, gardening, walking, living your life without constantly worrying about whether your body can cope. Strength gives you options.
Your training should include movements such as:
The exact exercise matters less than having a programme that is safe, appropriate and gradually progresses as you become stronger.
No. People often assume they have missed their opportunity because they didn’t exercise enough when they were younger, but your body can continue adapting and becoming stronger well beyond your 40s. Starting now is far more valuable than wishing you had started ten years ago.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight or change how your body looks, but strength training gives you an investment in the person you want to be in ten, twenty and thirty years. The goal is to be strong enough to keep doing the things you enjoy, fit enough to say yes to opportunities, confident enough to trust your body and capable enough to live independently for as long as possible.
